An after-school film program gets a crash course in documentary filmmaking when they make a film about their teacher getting her hair done. Made for the 2013 International Documentary Challenge.

Teacher's Weave was created by Factory filmmakers as a part of the 2013 International Documentary Challenge, a five-day competitive filmmaking event undertaken by more than 100 teams around the world. The young filmmakers documented the process of their teacher getting a hair weave and considered the cultural complications involved the "hair trade."

The Factory kicks off 2013 with the Miles to Go film premiere and a consciousness-expanding collage project in the Annex.

In Museums Rule!, a docent with superpowers teaches a cohort of teens proper Museum behavior. Made in partnership with KQED and the De Young’s teen ambassador program.

Last Wednesday, August 22nd, students, families, non-profit partners, and industry professionals filed into The San Francisco Public Library’s Koret Auditorium for The Factory 2011-2012 Year End Screening.

Factory filmmaker Lily Yu is on the front page of the AFI/Discovery Channel Silverdocs film festival website.

Lily participated in the Corporation for Public Broadcasting’s American Graduates panel and spoke about her experiences creating video content about Oakland’s high-school dropout crisis in partnership with KQED. Read more about her experience here.

For the past month or so, students from The Factory have been collaborating with Youth Ambassadors from the De Young Museum as part of a partnership facilitated between BAVC and KQED (did you get all that?  Talk about community partnerships!).

The students in The Factory were charged with producing a compelling video that the De Young can use to show other students who visit the museum what to expect and how to behave.  Museums have a number of very logical rules that are often overlooked - but if broken can result in the damage of some irreplaceable and incredibly valuable art and artifacts.

Spring is here and there is plenty to celebrate at The Factory aside from the change in weather.

Last Wednesday thirty intrepid students gathered at the Bay Area Video Coalition’s facility to partake in a Young Filmmaker’s Workshop put on by BAVC and Alternatives in Action. The goal of the four-hour training intensive was to help students further develop their storytelling skills and to make them aware of one of the most prestigious screening opportunities for youth filmmakers: AIA's annual Project Youth View event in Alameda.
