The Public Policy Institute of California is dedicated to informing and improving public policy in the state through nonpartisan research on a range of topics. PPIC seeks a creative, energetic production manager to play a key role in producing PPIC’s product line. As an essential member of the communications group, the production manager will implement the production of all PPIC print and online products, creating a variety of high-quality, accessible, and engaging publications and outreach vehicles. PPIC’s core audiences include policymakers in Sacramento and Washington DC, local officials around the state, and decision makers in the nonprofit, foundation, and private sectors.

The production manager reports to the director of content strategy. This position will be based at PPIC’s offices in downtown San Francisco.

- Create layouts and format figures for reports, blog posts, presentations, and other materials using Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
- Format charts, tables, maps, and other graphics in Illustrator
- Convert text into html for posting in WordPress
- Create and maintain institutional document layouts in InDesign
- Update templates for a variety of publications
- Collaborate with authors and others across the institute on a range of design and production needs
- Work with editors and authors on data visualization projects
- Attend occasional press checks for printed material
- Keep up to date with industry best practices and monitor activities of peer organizations
- Act as key member of PPIC’s communications team, covering other responsibilities and tasks when required



- Bachelor’s degree, plus a minimum of five years’ experience producing print and online publications

- Portfolio of print and digital layout projects

- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

- Proficiency in Adobe CC (Illustrator, InDesign, Acrobat, Dreamweaver, Photoshop)

- Proficiency in html and WordPress

- Experience with Infogram, Tableau, or other data visualization applications

- Knowledge of the printing process and preflight tools

- Exceptional project management skills—ability to handle multiple tasks under strict deadlines

- Problem-solving ability and keen attention to detail

- Excellent written and verbal communication; a gift for working diplomatically across functions and departments.
