***NOTE-- please let us know in your cover letter if you are interested in a full-time or part-time position with Youth Beat.***

Youth Beat at KDOL-TV is a non-profit program (fiscally sponsored by the Oakland Public Education Fund) that offers free media production programs to Oakland youth. We provide hands-on training and job experience in video production, journalism, narrative filmmaking, photography, design and animation. We teach media to middle school and high school students with the goal of keeping them engaged in school and developing job readiness skills to pursue a career in the media industry.

Our team of teaching artists, educators and producers facilitate after school programs at KDOL - TV, work in schools across the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD), and lead freelance media projects for our youth media production company. We are currently looking for energetic, creative individuals who are passionate about media, sharing their craft, and working with socio-economically and ethnically diverse groups of youth.

We are staffing up for the 2021-22 school year and looking to add several talented Teaching Artists to our instructional team. Youth Beat is a small but rapidly growing non-profit that offers tremendous room for growth. Our Teaching Artists play a crucial role as we grow our capacity to serve more Oakland youth. We are looking for experienced video pros who are as excited about making professional creative content as they are about training and mentoring low-income, BIPOC teens. Could that person be you?

Full Time Opportunities:

Our full-time Teaching Artist / Creative Producer will lead our program at MetWest High School, one of our longest-standing school partners.

The teaching artist will use and adapt existing curriculum to teach professional media skills to students, and also have a crucial role in curating and putting together the MetWest Live shows and video content. The classes are taught out of our television studio at KDOL-TV, next door to MetWest. Students are given the opportunity to express themselves, learn employable skills and gain access to internship and job opportunities.

The Teaching Artist / Creative Producer will also be part of our after-school teaching team for our T/Th film program (applicants must be able to work until 6:30pm on T/Th). They will fill in other various teaching roles depending on scheduling and workload. They will also be part of our core communications team at Youth Beat, developing projects like student highlight reels, testimonial content and other promotional materials.
Prospective teaching artists for this position should demonstrate an ability to connect with inner-city youth, as well as a strong understanding of professional media production skills. Prior experience teaching or working with youth media programming preferred.

Community Day School (15-20 hours/week)
