About Us

BAVC Media (Bay Area Video Coalition) is a leading nonprofit organization working at the intersection of media arts, technology, and education. Founded in 1976, we have spent nearly 50 years empowering media makers to develop and share diverse stories to create social change. Our work centers in access, participation and equity pillars that frame all of our programs, from youth and adult training, to workforce development, artist development, preservation, community media, field building and research activities. BAVC Media is headquartered in San Francisco at the Ninth Street Independent Film Center, with satellite spaces in San Francisco at KQED and in Oakland. We also offer regional programs through collaborative initiatives like the Bay Area Media Maker Summit (BAMMS) and the national Independent Media Arts Group (IMAG) with the National Endowment for the Arts.

Position Overview

We seek to hire a Part-Time Managing Director (20 hours/week) to play a critical leadership role at our organization. This role will drive operational excellence and sustainable growth by overseeing finance, operations, and earned revenue programs. The ideal candidate has strong business acumen, project and team management skills, a strong interest in the media arts and emerging technologies, and an entrepreneurial spirit. This role reports directly to the Executive Director, and will lead our Finance and Operations department that includes IT and HR, as well as serving as chief of staff.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Leadership & Revenue Generation

  • Lead financial strategy, budgeting, forecasting, and reporting to ensure timely and accurate execution.
  • Lead financial and institutional data management and reporting, including the generation of a monthly dashboard to track KPIs and Board reports.
  • Develop and expand BAVC Media’s earned revenue streams that support BAVC Media programs and financial sustainability, with a focus on developing market-informed services and pricing.
  • Implement systems to track and analyze program costs and revenue, in collaboration with program and marketing staff.
  • Lead BAVC Media’s IT planning, projects, and personnel.

Strategic Planning & Operations Management

  • Partner with Executive Director and Board to develop and implement BAVC Media’s strategic plan, and to analyze opportunities and challenges on an ongoing basis.
  • Direct operations across our Bay Area locations.
  • Ensure our facilities and equipment are accessible, industry-standard, and welcoming to our participants.
  • Support management, renovation and capital campaign-related activities at the Ninth Street Independent Film Center.
  • Lead BAVC Media’s staffing plan and professional development activities.

Qualifications

Required

  • Proven track record of developing and managing earned revenue programs
  • Strong financial acumen and experience with nonprofit business models
  • Knowledge about typical government grants and contracts requirements and structures
  • Experience tracking and analyzing program costs and revenue across multiple locations
  • Experience supervising staff and leading projects
  • Excellent analytical, communication and project management skills
  • Strong Excel skills
  • Experience evaluating and implementing software solutions
  • Strong interest in independent media and/or arts and culture

Preferred

  • Experience developing, working for, or investing in a social enterprise (e.g. a for-profit subsidiary of a nonprofit, a B Corp, or another mission-driven enterprise like a media production company or an art-house cinema.)
  • Experience building training programs in-person, hybrid and asynchronous
  • Knowledge of the independent media landscape and industry trends

  • Occasional evenings and weekends may be required for meetings or supporting programmatic events.

Salary

The wage range for this non-exempt position is $48.07-$62.50/hour (about $50,000-$65,000 annually) depending on experience. This is a hybrid position with 2-3 days per week required to occur in our San Francisco headquarters office between the general hours of 8am-6pm. We anticipate the possibility of the Managing Director role increasing to full-time with health benefits in 2026.
