Wuendy Calmo is a Youth Media instructor at BAVC who mentors young filmmakers and manages the production and distribution of student projects.Understands the power of youth-produced stories and media for social change and education, and empower youth while pushing them creatively, balancing production-driven learning with their broader development.

Wuendy Calmo is a storyteller from dynamic East Oakland’s Maya Mam community, who crafts complex BIPOC narratives. With a Film and Digital Media degree from UC Santa Cruz, they enrich their understanding of visual narratives and digital communication. A previous Bridges Fellow in 2019, they aspire to amplify marginalized voices, fostering positive change through storytelling.

They previously cultivated empowering and reciprocal digital channels of information that enlightened and engaged the Bay Area’s Latino and Mayan immigrant communities as a Mayan Community Engagement Assistant for El Timpano. Notably, they contributed as a resident artist and writer at Moments Cooperative and Community Space in 2021. A previous writing fellow at BAYCAT in 2022. In 2023 a writing fellow for Justice for My Sister BIPOC Sci-Fi Screenwriting Lab.

My hobbies include hiking and strolling through the redwoods. But I love a good karaoke session too! As well as playing lots of fun board and video games with my family.
