JOB SUMMARY
Provide in-person instruction for the Bridges COYA Pre-Apprenticeship and Apprenticeship Programs. Support the development of the curriculum. Mentor Opportunity Youth (18-24 year old filmmakers), and manage the training of participants. Understand the power of young people trained in editing, balancing production-driven learning with their broader development.
ABOUT BAVC MEDIA
BAVC Media (Bay Area Video Coalition) has been a trusted community educator, collaborator, incubator, community builder, and resource for the media arts world since 1976.
BAVC Media serves as a community hub and resource for media makers in the Bay Area and across the country, reaching thousands of freelancers, filmmakers, jobseekers, activists, and artists every year. We provide access to media-making technology, hands-on training, workshops, mentorship, preservation services, broadcast opportunities, artist development support, and more.
Across BAVC Media’s programs, we advocate for those whose stories aren’t being told and provide the resources for anyone to create, share, and amplify their stories and those of their communities.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- With the guidance and support of the Workforce Team, coordinate all of the key elements of Pre-Apprenticeship and Apprenticeship programming, including outreach and recruitment, classroom-based and hands-on project-based instruction, collaboration with internal and external partners, field-trips and guest speakers, and placing the majority of participants into apprenticeships and jobs post-program completion.
Recruitment
- Recruit and select 10-12 participants for each 18-week cohort-based program for Pre-Apprentices in Editing, 5 participants for the spring/ summer Apprenticeship program, and potentially 10-15 participants for the fall Apprenticeship program.
Curriculum Development / Program Plans
- Lead the development of the course curriculum, lesson plans, and student work plans with contracted instructors
- Iterate upon curriculum development as the program progresses
- Support the social-emotional assessment and program plan
Technical Guidance and Support
- Provide guidance and support to participants as they learn how to edit, as a co-instructor and mentor
- Ensure that participants are meeting or exceeding satisfactory competencies for the Pre-Apprenticeship and Apprenticeship
- Prepare students to present at end-of-program celebrations, rehearse, and provide public speaking support
- Develop client media work with the Director for Apprentices (e.g. external clients, with BAVC Productions, with BAVC Marketing team)
- Create Pre-Prod-Post-Delivery schedules with clients or in-house with BAVC Productions or the Marketing team
Collaboration with Supportive Service Providers
- With support from the Director, build and maintain relationships with social service providers who serve our target participant population. (Seek guidance from the Director drawing from our COYA Apprenticeship Planning grant.)
- Implement supportive practices from partner organizations into our training and support curriculum, as possible.
Data Management
- With support from Senior Workforce Development staff, enter and track participant data for weekly attendance and for reporting
- Document class/student progress through imagery and written word to provide weekly updates
Culminating Events
- Plan and produce COYA Pre-Apprenticeship and Apprenticeship culminating events for each cohort.
Employer Engagement for Apprenticeship and Job Placements
- With support from the Workforce Development Director utilize the employer committee from the COYA Apprenticeship program to support the Bridges Pre-Apprenticeship and Apprenticeship Program as follows:
- To recruit professional volunteers for career panels and guest speakers
- To secure field trip opportunities for each cohort
- To cultivate Apprenticeships and jobs for participants upon program completion (our goal is to place 50%)
General Team Collaboration
BAVC Media’s COYA Apprenticeship and Pre-Apprenticeship programs are designed to be workforce development programs – blending best practices from across BAVC Media programs. To this end, the incumbent will collaborate and communicate internally with personnel from workforce development programs,including:
- Maintain and enhance BAVC’s standard of instruction while working to meet challenging deadlines in a positive work environment
- Utilize a mix of in-person interactions and digital tools, which will include but are not limited to social media (such as Instagram), virtual meeting platforms (such as Google Meet or Zoom), and learning platforms such as Google Classroom
- Complete professional development/growth activities in accordance with the requirements of the faculty development plan
- Ensure that the Finance and Operations team is apprised of key payments, especially the payment of participants’ stipends. Consult with the Workforce Development team to receive guidance/support on this activity.
- Manage personal purchase and reimbursement requests and report them in advance to the Program Director to be signed and approved
- Perform other job-related duties as required, some weekends and evenings required.
SKILLS & REQUIREMENTS
- BA or MFA in a related field, experience may be substituted for degree
- Two or more years of teaching experience, preferably with 18-25 year olds
- Demonstrated proficiency in all stages of film production and post-production using applicable technologies
- Editing experience on professional projects
- Professional knowledge and demonstrated commitment towards youth development
- Experience working with diverse communities to create supportive democratic class culture (team-building, conflict management, humor, flexibility, energy and vision)
- Excellent organizational, project management, group facilitation, written and oral communication skills
- Comfort with online media dissemination: writing blogs and maintaining visibility of student work
- Demonstrated experience building community relationships with youth, family members, and local partners; committed to social justice; patience with students, demonstrated sensitivity to varying learning abilities and styles
- Weekend and evening flexibility is required
- Spanish-speaking or second-language fluency a plus
COMPENSATION & SCHEDULE
This is a full-time, non-exempt position, as described above. Instruction and lab days are conducted in person. Staff meetings are required and may be hybrid. Temporary, full-time positions are eligible for paid vacation and sick time. We also offer free registration in BAVC classes and workshops whenever schedule and availability permit.
Pay: $50,000-$55,000 DOE
