Camp Reel Stories Gets Girls Into Filmmaking By Valentina I. Valentini Valentina I. Valentini If women and girls are better represented behind the scenes in the media, will they also be better reflected on-screen? Yes, believes Esther Pearl, who founded Camp Reel Stories five summers ago as a series of filmmaking camps for girls and young women, where attendees write, shoot and edit their own movies while being mentored by industry pros. Since then, the camp has grown from five-day classes attended by some 30 girls to sometimes four-week sessions that include 200. And after years of operating in the [...]

One Day at a Time

The mission statement here at Camp Reel Stories is, “When women and girls are better represented behind the scenes in the media, they will be better reflected on the screen.” If you for some reason needed proof of this I suggest you turn your attention to this knockout of a show. One Day at a Time is the story of a Cuban American family living in Los Angeles, tackling issues of what it’s like to be Cuban in America, trying to raise a family without a father and all the other complications of raising two teens. The main character, Penelope [...]

Lady Bird – Film Review

Written by Clarissa Lam Everything about Lady Bird seems to challenge itself, a wildness that in this case, is completely natural and refreshing. Lady Bird, with her red hair conflicting with her catholic schoolgirl uniform, goes on a typical teenage girl’s journey of self discovery. While the general concept is nothing new, the execution is. Greta Gerwig has created a character any teenage girl can relate to. The movie takes place in Sacramento in the early 2000s at a time in Lady Bird’s life where she is making decisions about college, arguing with her mother, sifting through friend and boyfriend [...]

Working with Dolby

This September, I had the opportunity of a lifetime mixing audio for my short film “After The Storm” with Director of Audio and Visual Production, John Loose, at Dolby studios in San Francisco. During our time at Dolby, we got to interact and experiment with state of the art sound equipment, create foley, and mix “After The Storm” in Dolby 5.1 surround sound. Along with fellow campers Sasha, Clarissa and Truly and CRS staff April and Esther, we learned many crucial lessons about sound in film.   One of the first (and most important lessons) we learned from John is [...]

Why media made by and for girls matters.

To kick off May and our $40K in May Crowdfunding Campaign we asked Student Board Member Maya Alter to blog for us.  Maya has attended Camp Reel Stories for three years and is part of the creative team that produced Brett: The Journey, one of our most watched and requested films ever. Why creating our own Media Matters. I don’t usually have a lot of time to sit down and watch TV, my time for media is usually dedicated to short videos, or Instagram, if anything. Esther asked me that for this post I talk about media that portrays girls [...]

[Guest Post] “My Time At YouTube” by Brianna, Intern at CRS

Camp Reel Stories had the opportunity to take a tour and test out VR (virtual reality) equipment at YouTube HQ! Our intern, Brianna, wrote about her experience: My time at YouTube started out with a tour of the campus. YouTube is not only innovating the way that we stream film but also the technology being used in order to create film. I had the amazing opportunity to take a tour of the YouTube headquarters in San Bruno. I was exploring the realm of virtual reality and 360 degree filming technology.  Not only did I get to learn about this new [...]

[Guest Post] Clarissa, Student Board Member, at Camp Reel Stories

I’ve gone to Camp Reel Stories three times so far and plan on going for a fourth time this summer. It’s become a tradition of sorts to attend camp, make a film, and watch it spread throughout the country to various film festivals and onto people’s screens, whether those are found on their phones, on their computers, or in movie theaters. I cannot confidently say that I will go into the film industry when I grow older, but I can say that I have found a sense of community through the camp and gained inspiration from strong women, who prove [...]

What’s it like to volunteer at Camp Reel Stories?

By Fiona Ryan This year I volunteered for all three weeks of Camp Reel Stories and it’s official—this camp is fun, inspiring, and totally impressive. As a volunteer, you are paired up with a production team of girls and you assist them with whatever they need to make their films happen. This can run the gamut from being an extra set of hands to restoring order and logic. It really just depends on the moment. Our campers tend to be extremely smart, friendly, and creative; so as a volunteer you’re bound to have a great time with them, I know [...]

Camp Reel Stories Reviews: Comet (2014) Directed by Sam Esmail

I [Fiona] love this movie. A lot. “Over the course of six years – and possibly in parallel universes – Kimberley and Dell try to overcome their differences and build a lasting romance” is how Netflix sums it up. And it got about a 50% on rotten tomatoes… so on the outside, this is one of those movies that could very much so go either way. Here we have a look into the relationship of two kids who so unconventionally meet (thankfully! Not often enough in movies are the lovers actually brought together in a believable and realistic way. We [...]
