Bay Area Film & Media Maker Survey

A study of our local Film and Media Sector.

Survey is now closed as of October 31, 11:59 PT

To effectively support and advocate for the film and media sector, we need to know how people working in the field are doing and what challenges they face. If you live in the Bay Area and produce media content, we want to hear from you!

The survey asks questions about:

  • The work you do in the film or media sector
  • The type(s) of content you produce
  • How do you sustain yourself and your creative practice
  • The sources of support you have access to

As the only survey of its kind, this study will be a critical source of information for governments, businesses, nonprofits, and individuals who want to support the region’s film and media sector.

All survey participants will have the chance to win 1 of 8 raffle prizes. Prizes include a $250 VISA gift card, merch and memberships to BAVC Media, Roxie Theater and SFFILM!

Who is eligible to take part in this survey?

Anyone who is

  • 18 or older
  • Involved in the production and/or distribution of film or media content (incl. film, television, web content, etc.) either in a creative or administrative capacity,
  • A current resident of the Bay Area (defined as the following counties: Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, Sonoma).

Why should I take the survey?

Your perspective is critical to our understanding of the Bay Area Media Sector. Having a concrete picture of our community will allow us to further catalyze growth in our industry. At the end of the survey, there is also a chance to win 1 of 8 raffle prizes!

Who is conducting this survey?

BAVC Media is a community hub and resource for media makers in the Bay Area. We are conducting this survey in collaboration with the arts and culture research firm, WolfBrown.

Who is funding this survey?

The survey is being made possible through generous support from the  Kenneth Rainin Foundation. The mission of the Kenneth Rainin Foundation is to enhance quality of life by championing the arts, promoting early childhood literacy and supporting research to cure chronic disease.

What will happen with the information?

A final report will be published on the BAVC Media website. The report will include a full analysis of the survey results.

What are you doing to ensure confidentiality and security of the data you collect?

Survey responses are submitted anonymously, meaning no identifying information such as your name, IP address, email address, or phone number will be connected to your answers. However, you will have the opportunity to submit your name and contact information if you want to receive follow-up communications about the final report or enter a raffle for 1 of 8 available prizes including a VISA gift card. Submitting your name and contact information is entirely optional. If you choose to submit your name and contact information, it will be stored in a separate database, so there’s no possibility of breaching the anonymity of your survey responses.

To help interpret responses, the survey collects some demographic information and information about your household. With the exception of the first three questions that confirm eligibility to take the survey,  all questions are optional. The answers you provide will be collected and stored in Alchemer, a U.S.-based survey software platform. Alchemer is committed to complying with international regulations and privacy frameworks including GDPR and US Privacy Shield. In their Privacy Policy they state, “Alchemer (the US entity) complies with the EU-U.S. Privacy Shield Framework and Swiss-U.S. Privacy Shield Framework as set forth by the U.S. Department of Commerce” and “Alchemer has certified to the Department of Commerce that it adheres to the Privacy Shield Principles.”
