As a recipient of the COYA (California Opportunity Youth Apprenticeship) Grant, BAVC Media is offering a paid editing pre-apprenticeship to eligible young adults ages 18-24. BAVC Media will provide an opportunity for in-depth professional development to aspiring editors from underrepresented communities.

Offerings & Structure

  • 11 young adults will be selected to train as assistant editors over the course of a 4-month program. The fellows will hone their craft and build experience through extensive training that will foster both technical and soft skill development.
  • Fellows will engage in formal weekly in-person classroom training, asynchronous (i.e. remote) learning, and other professional development opportunities.
  • In addition to professional skills, the lead instructor and BAVC staff will match socioemotional support and resources to Fellows throughout the duration of the program.
  • Each fellow will receive a stipend of $6,000 and emerge from the program with enhanced skills, expanded portfolios, and strong connections to their peers.
  • A lead instructor with substantial professional editing experience will be leading the program and BAVC Media’s Advanced Training/Youth and Emerging MediaMakers (YEMM) staff will provide program oversight.

Primary Outputs

  • New and expanded skill sets for fellows in areas that range from transcription and timecoding to creating assemblies and polishing scenes.
  • Examples of softwares taught: Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Audition
  • Stronger career-readiness skills for fellows in areas such as building professional networks, finding and working with creative collaborators, and interviewing for promising job opportunities.
  • Expanded portfolios for each participant, with the addition of new professional pieces created during the fellowship program.

Eligibility & Criteria

This program is being offered to opportunity young adults only. All applicants must be between the ages of 18 and 24 by the start of the program. Opportunity youth/young adults must demonstrate (i.e. provide proof) that they meet one of the following criteria:

  • Currently or formerly foster youth
  • Currently or formerly Pell eligible
  • Currently or formerly WIOA Youth or Adult eligible
  • Currently or formerly enrolled in a Title 1 school
  • Residing in a high poverty census tract
  • Formerly incarcerated or justice system-involved
  • Young parent
  • System-involved (foster care, mental health institutions, etc.)
  • Person with disability/disabled person
  • Attention to detail, ability to communicate clearly and proactively, and a highly collaborative approach.
  • Availability to commit 10.5 hours (on average) each week for a 4-month duration of program.
  • Basic familiarity with Adobe Premiere Pro.
  • Familiarity with video and audio formats and the equipment they run on.
  • Overall knowledge of Macs or PCs, and multimedia software.
  • Ideally, fellowship applicants are past participants of BAVC Media or another film and media organization or program, who possess at least entry-level facility with video production and post-production.
  • All applicants should be interested in pursuing editing as a full-time career and interested in participating in a cohort-type/peer-learning environment.
  • If you’ve previously participated in BAVC Media’s “Better Together” Fellowship (in collaboration with PG&E), you are not eligible to participate. This includes both the editor and media producer tracks.

Expected Time Commitments

  • Fellowship will occur between mid-April 2026 and late-July 2026
  • Fellows will meet with their cohort at least 3x a week, in-person, at the BAVC office in San Francisco.

Meeting times are as follows

  • Every Monday, 1:30-5pm
  • Every Tuesday, 1:30-5pm
  • Every Wednesday, 1:30-5pm

Fellows are expected to complete asynchronous (i.e. remote) learning on their own time. Attendance at all in-person activities is mandatory, multiple absences may result in reduced stipend.

Application Timeline

  • Sunday, March 1 @ 11:59PM PT: Applications due, application will officially close at midnight
  • BAVC Media will begin reviewing applications on a rolling basis and select applicants will be invited to complete a short interview
  • Wednesday, March 18: Last day of applicant interviews
  • Week of March 23: Fellows will have been notified of acceptance into the program
  • Tuesday, March 31: Last day for selected fellows to confirm participation in fellowship
  • Monday, April 13: In-person orientation @ BAVC Media office in SF
