Individual

Are you a theater student with a flair for immersive environments and dramatic lighting? We’re looking for a creative, detail-oriented designer to lead the set, prop, and lighting design for a private themed party: Manic Panic Botanic — a lush, campy dream world where 1970s-80s glam rock meets murderous flora.

Your role will be to design how different rooms (indoor and outdoor) in a house will be transformed into theatrical scenes that combine killer plants and glittering glam. This includes set pieces, prop concepts, and lighting plans.

What you’ll do:

  • Design staging concepts for each room/space of the house (entryway, living room, pool area, etc.)
  • Include a lighting plan for each area that:
    • Uses existing outlets efficiently
    • Specifies lighting types (e.g. LED, colored gels, practicals, etc.)
    • Suggests installation methods and special effects (e.g. color filters, shadows, angles)
  • Recommend creative prop and set ideas using reused/repurposed materials
  • Collaborate with our build team to bring the designs to life on a limited budget

What we’ll provide:

  • A basic floor plan of the house (indoor and outdoor spaces)
  • A list of available electrical outlets and extension capabilities
  • Budget details and access to local reuse centers (Scrap SF, Urban Ore, East Bay Depot)

Who we’re looking for:

  • Current student in a theater production, scenic design, or lighting design program (community college, CSU, or UC)
  • Has experience designing sets and lighting for plays, performances, or installations
  • Can produce sketches, mockups, or simple schematics
  • Creative, resourceful, and excited by low-budget spectacle and reused materials

Schedule: Flexible planning in July, finalize design in August, build sessions August 25 – September 5. Event September 6.

Interviews will be remote. Once hired, there will be a visit or two to the location, otherwise design work can be remote. On-site support to build team may be necessary Aug 25 – Sept 5, to be determined based on designs.

To apply, email a short note about your experience and interest, plus any photos, portfolio links, or mockups of past work.
