Preservation Technician

The Preservation Technician will work on ongoing projects within the department to promote BAVC Media’s continued excellence in the field of audiovisual archiving.


BAVC Media (Bay Area Video Coalition) has been a trusted community educator, collaborator, incubator, community builder, and resource for the media arts world since 1976.

BAVC Media serves as a community hub and resource for media makers in the Bay Area and across the country, reaching thousands of freelancers, filmmakers, jobseekers, activists, and artists every year. We provide access to media-making technology, hands-on training, workshops, mentorship, preservation services, broadcast opportunities, artist development support, and more.

Across BAVC Media’s programs, we advocate for those whose stories aren’t being told and provides the resources for anyone to create, share, and amplify their stories and those of their communities.

  • Evaluating, baking, cleaning and labeling audio and video tapes
  • Performing supervised transfers and keeping a log of errors
  • Maintaining and cleaning equipment as needed
  • Researching developments in preservation technology, providing input on equipment and supply purchases
  • Developing documentation for clients and future preservation technicians
  • Assisting with installation and maintenance of equipment
  • Providing additional support for the Preservation staff and facility in general, when needed
  • Providing services to a mix of grant-funded and fee-for-service projects
  • Coordinating preservation activities, like the Preservation Access Program application and review process
  • Collaborating with other BAVC Media departments, including Community Media, Development, Marketing, Youth and Emerging Media
  • Maker Programs and Artist Development.


  • Proficiency with video and audio formats and the equipment it runs on
  • Understanding of video and audio preservation techniques and theories
  • Technical expertise to clean, handle and store tapes
  • Overall knowledge of Macs, PCs, extensive knowledge of multimedia software; ability to troubleshoot problems; signal flow, patchbays,
  • VTRs, Black Magic, time base correctors, scopes, other video equipment
  • Comfortable with scripting languages such as python is preferred
  • Comfortable with the use of GitHub for code maintenance and documentation is preferred
  • Strong customer support skills
  • Ability to lift equipment up to 50lbs


This is a full-time position (35 hours/week) in person at our Oakland office. Some weekends may be required. Benefits include paid vacation, sick time, and holidays as well as employer-paid medical, dental, and vision benefits.

Range: $50,000 – 60,000 annually, depending on experience.

We also offer free registration in BAVC classes and workshops whenever schedule and availability permits.
