BAVC Media announces Susie Cagle as Summer 2015 Artist-In-Residence

San Francisco, CA — Bay Area Video Coalition (BAVC Media) is pleased to announce that Susie Cagle will be the Summer 2015 Resident for BAVC Media’s inaugural Artist-in-Residence (AIR) program, made possible in part through the generosity of the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.

The AIR program will give Cagle access to BAVC Media’s state-of-the-art technical facilities and in-house expertise, along with the opportunity to produce work in collaboration with BAVC Media programs. Cagle plans to work on an interactive, animated piece about the growth of contract labor in the American workforce, a topic she’s been researching and reporting on extensively for the last year.

Cagle is a columnist at Al Jazeera America and Pacific Standard, and a frequent contributor to other outlets such as the Guardian, Forbes, Next City, Fusion, and others. She’s a 2013 International Women’s Media Foundation grantee, a 2014 Online Journalism Award winner and, starting this fall, will be a 2015-2016 John S. Knight Journalism Fellow at Stanford. Susie is currently working on an illustrated book about boom and bust economics in California.

“The AIR program continues BAVC Media’s commitment to being a resource for Bay Area artists, who have been and remain an integral part of BAVC Media’s community since our founding nearly four decades ago," says BAVC Media Executive Director, Carol Varney. "I am excited that BAVC Media will be a resource for Susie in her creative process, and I look forward to seeing her work as it is shaped in relation to the BAVC Media community.”

“I am so excited to hone my animation skills and become a part of the thriving BAVC Media community,” says Cagle. “Being self-taught and self-employed, I'm always learning on the job, and by myself. This residency will really allow me to level up my practice.”

Cagle was selected by a panel made up of BAVC Media staff, visual artists and arts professionals, including: Jaime Austin, Curator and Director of Programs for ZERO1; Tanya Zimbardo, Assistant Curator of Media Arts at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Ben Valentine, freelance writer, art critic and media strategist; Jenny Odell, Bay Area artist; Mwende Hahesy, BAVC Media Training Strategist; Arya Zarrinkelk, BAVC Media Senior Career Specialist; and Matt Sussman, BAVC Media Public Programs Manager.

The primary aims of the Residency are to provide Bay Area artists with the space and resources to work with media that may include video, audio, web or other interactive media/coding or design/development software, and access to new creative opportunities through facilitated collaboration with BAVC Media programs. Residents may apply BAVC Media’s resources toward a project already underway or to a newly proposed project and will have opportunities for exhibition and public programs connected to their Residency work.

Each Residency period is three months long, with three Residencies annually. The upcoming Residency sessions are Fall 2015 (October 1 – December 23, 2015) and Spring 2016 (Feb 1 – April 31, 2016). In addition to giving a public Artist’s Talk at the end of their respective residency period, all three AIRs will participate in a final group exhibition, scheduled for June 2016 in San Francisco.
