Bay Area Video Coalition (BAVC Media) Taps Desmond Holt as First Recipient of Carl Weichert Mograph Scholarship
Creative spirit of BAVC Media Instructor Carl Weichert lives on through emerging motion graphics artist.
San Francisco, CA—One year ago this May, BAVC Media instructor Carl Weichert passed away at age 51, leaving hundreds of friends, students and collaborators with a profound sense of loss. Finding humor in almost every situation, Weichert was known as the ultimate sherpa, taking BAVC Media students to the top of the editing/motion graphics mountain for over a decade.
“He was a wonderful man with a giant heart, full of love to give and to receive,” Svetlana Butnaru, one of Weichert’s past students, remarked last May. His spirit inspired BAVC Media to create the Carl Weichert Mograph Scholarship and with generous support from the BAVC Media community including donations from Innesa Goldman, Caroline Jaquiss, Alicia Schmidt, Jeff Weichert, Kimberly Marcus, Laura Splan, Mindy Aronoff and Aylara Odekova, BAVC Media today awarded Desmond Holt full tuition for a Motion Graphics Certificate, the first recipient of the Carl Weichert Mograph Scholarship.
Desmond Holt, aka “Designer Desmond,” is also an instructor of many kinds, providing nearly twenty “how-to” tech videos on YouTube for anyone to access. Holt is a graduate of BAVC Media’s Next Gen Bridges program, which provides tech training, networking opportunities, portfolio building, field trips to tech companies and a paid internship for low-income young adults between the ages of 18-26 from at-risk environments. Upon graduation, students become peer mentors to other young people working to change their lives, which is exactly what Holt did. Now, with a love of music and visual effects as well an A.A. degree from City College San Francisco (CCSF), Holt will be able to take the next steps in his design career as he completes the Mograph certificate.
“Carl was such a creative force at BAVC Media,” said Carol Varney, BAVC Media’s Executive Director. “He would have loved to see how Desmond will use formal motion graphics skills to create his own commercial and personal projects.”
