Meet Zander Constien, BAVC Media’s Membership & Programs Assistant

Published On: April 8, 2025 |

Zander Constien recently joined the BAVC Media team as our Membership and Programs Assistant, where they’re helping foster meaningful connections with our members and supporting the day-to-day rhythm of our public programs. If you have any questions about membership email him at membership@bavc.org and learn more about membership here. Working alongside the Marketing Department, Zander also plays a key role in strengthening BAVC Media’s outreach and community engagement efforts.

Originally from Colorado, he brings a rich background in cinema and language studies, along with hands-on experience supporting independent filmmakers at both BAVC and the Roxie Theater. When they’re not busy uplifting local artists and creatives, you can find them experimenting with animation, performing in drag, or out on long walks with their dog, King Boo.

We caught up with Zander to learn more about their creative practice, what drew them to BAVC Media, and what excites them most about this new chapter.

Tell us a little bit about yourself (career, hobbies, anything you’d like us to know).

I got my BFA in Cinema Studies from the University of Colorado Boulder, where I learned the value of independent film for artists and communities alike. After completing my thesis film, I’ve been working on my next animated short film, slowly but surely.

When did you first cross paths with BAVC and what about the organization’s mission and vision resonates with you?

I first heard of BAVC Media while working at the Roxie Theater. Any time I brought up wanting to learn more about indie filmmaking, finding equipment, or spaces to work on my passion projects, my peers recommended BAVC. I’m so glad I found BAVC and now I get to collaborate with like minded people who share a passion for indie filmmaking everyday.

What are you most excited about in taking on the Membership and Programs Assistant role?

I’m excited to meet all of the members! The Bay area is full of fantastic creatives and I can’t wait to help them get the resources they need to pursue their media dreams.

What advice would you give a person who has a story to tell but doesn’t know where to start?

Dessert first! The best way I’ve found to start a personal project is to start at the most exciting part. Whether that be writing the climactic action scene in your script or experimenting with different animation styles, start where your passion lies and things will fall into place.

What are 3 things that are currently bringing you joy?

I love exploring this beautiful city, something exciting lies around every corner. Also, baking, cooking, or making cocktails are always sure-fire ways to spark joy in my evenings. Last and most importantly, going on long walks with my dog King Boo!
