The purpose of this class it to equip students with the ability to reach out to the media with confidence in today’s rapidly changing digital landscape. While courses in marketing focus on elevating your brand on your own platform, publicity is about getting covered on someone else’s platform. The Internet has made big changes to journalism, and that in turn means the old ways of pitching don’t work. This course will teach students the tips and pitfalls of pitching stories to newspapers, magazines, radio shows, podcasts, and blogs in today’s fast-paced digital landscape. As journalism goes through the digital revolution, even experienced publicists can learn new tricks to effectively land stories. Those new to PR will learn basics like how to create a press release, how to find media contacts, how to plan a publicity campaign, and when to send a media advisory, all while preparing them to pitch in an industry still adapting to the changes of the Internet.
