From Freelance to Google, Video Production Pros Break it Down
September’s Tech Talk Tuesday featured Cleave Frink, Jr. Production Manager and Liz Cabrera, Producer of the Google Developer Studio, video production arm of the Google Engineering team. They gave us a glimpse into how they arrived to their current roles, advice on how to build a career in video production, and how different business settings can influence the types of roles available. And while both Cleave and Liz confirmed that the current video production market is competitive, especially in the corporate realm, demand continues to grow based on how the global population consumes media. So don’t give up! You [...]
You want a job? Start acting like a baby.
People think about job search success in terms of the outcome—landing a job. At BAVC Media, we love when our clients get jobs, but we think their success is defined not by what happens at the end of the search but how clients get there. Anyone who has been through a job search knows the process rarely goes smoothly. In retrospect, the process can look haphazard and chaotic—a series of ups and downs that really only make sense when clients reflect back on the experience. But it can feel confounding and unnerving when they’re in it. The ups might look [...]

How did you first hear about BAVC Media? Unemployed Production-side person. Got SF Goodwill Workforce grant. Tell us your BAVC Media story. (500 words or less) I decided to get into editing after 25 years in production. I evaluated several options and BAVC Media was the clear winner in terms of value. They have up-to-date equipment/software, industry-seasoned instructors, and course diversity/scheduling flexibility. Best of all, the connections one makes are terrific because the classes are mixed with students from all the various programs and corporate training. The other fantastic aspect is the career workshops and counseling. They revolutionized my thinking in [...]

How did you first hear about BAVC Media? I heard about it through my friend Dwight Burks who is owner/founder of Resolution Workshop. Tell us your BAVC Media story. I came to the BAVC Media as a classic hand-drawn animator. I needed to update my skills to keep up with the changing medium and to get new clients. TechSF's motion graphics certificate provided the foundation I needed to keep expanding my abilities and clientele. I found the teachers, the community and the classes, all to be refreshing and informative. I appreciate the way BAVC Media approaches each individual's background [...]

How did you first hear about BAVC Media? I believe an EDD workshop than mentioned BAVC Media and TechSF Tell us your BAVC Media story. I found BAVC Media when looking for work having finished a San Francisco Coding Bootcamp. BAVC Media helped me to realize my desire to make working for myself a real possibility. How did you first hear about BAVC Media? A friend recommended BAVC Media. For the tech program and non-employed help. Tell us your BAVC Media story. I am originally from Barcelona, Catalonia (now Spain). I originally came to the US in 1993 to go to university with an international exchange program. Part of that program required to do an internship in a local company and I found my first job in the corporate communications department of Synopsis in Mountain View. I ended up working for Synopsys and stayed in the US until December 2001. At that moment, I decided [...]

How did you first hear about BAVC Media? I had friends who were very active in the Bay Area Documentary Film Community. While I was on a visit from LA they took me to a party at BAVC Media in 2004. Tell us your BAVC Media story. I was a Feature Film Editor in Hollywood for 30 years, but when I moved to the Bay Area in 2005 I decided to leave the Entertainment Business. However, it is hard to stay away from one’s passions, and in 2010 I decided to make a documentary on Cuban music. I joined [...]
The Power of Place and Community in 2016
We call the small area off the lobby at BAVC Media “the Conference Room.” It seems like an odd name for the space because, when I think of a conference room, I think of dark walls and people in suits. This doesn’t describe this space or the people who meet here. The room is compact but its high ceilings lined with vents make it feel breezy and spacious. Walls of windows and sliding glass doors brighten it even on a dreary day. The other walls are painted a happy green apple and crayons sit on the table for doodling. The [...]

I came to BAVC Media to take classes many years ago, and after hearing of the TechSF program, I got enrolled. It's been a great experience – the support and guidance of the counselors and instructors is invaluable, as is the camaraderie of the other enrolled peers. I've gotten so much valuable input on how to craft my website, video reel and resume to best position myself in the market. Anyone who is wanting to redirect their career path int to the world of video, design, web or coding should definitely take advantage of this awesome program. http://andybydalek.com/
